About the Book

Always AT Choice: Strategies for Moving on After the Death of a Spouse or Life Trauma

By Larry Freeborg

Wisdom for Finding Your Way Forward in Life, Love, Relationships and Business By Recognizing Your Choice Points

Plus Tools for Communicating, Coping, Transcending and Thriving

Larry Freeborg remembers the day vividly when he realized he was not powerless in the face of total despair and grief. It happened when he was in the “psych ward” after the death of his 39-year-old wife from leukemia, leaving him with four young children, right as his company eliminated his job, and the economy was in a tailspin with 8% unemployment. Not being able to face the world, he asked his parents to look after his children and sought treatment. Based on his beliefs and his upbringing, at best he could see nothing, but the bleak prospect of a life dictated by eight hours of corporate work, coming home to cooking, cleaning and attending to his children with no relief. His anger boiled over.

But a steadfast nurse arrived as he was railing “It’s not a choice. I have to take care of my kids!” Patiently and respectfully, she told him there was always a choice. She offered alternatives—Having his parents step in permanently, sending the kids to residential schools, and other options. Then, she pointed out that if he kept his kids at home, there were other options than him doing the cooking—hire someone to cook for the kids, purchase prepared meals or teach his kids to cook. Finally, it dawned on him—every moment offered a choice. He was ALWAYS AT CHOICE.

That was the turning point for Larry Freeborg, when he took back his life and started moving forward at 40. He is now 86 and has penned a book that richly compiles his life-long learnings from that point forward. Always AT Choice: Strategies for Moving on After the Death of a Spouse or Life Trauma is for those who have known grief, pain and suffering and can’t see to a future of freedom. In fact, that is the theme of the book cover, a ship in full sail, leaving the storm for the sunshine into freedom and peace. It was artwork he created while still institutionalized. It symbolized where he was headed.

Larry’s book isn’t just for people who have lost someone. It’s a manual filled with practical life wisdom for personal fulfillment, home or the office. He offers insights on:

· Values

· Accountability and responsibility

· Capitalizing on one’s natural gifts and talents

· Managing your emotional mood.

· Effective communication skills that lead to the results you want

· Learning from your body’s messages

· Accepting and coming to terms with loss of any kind

· Discovering how to work your way through fear

· The miracles produced through equine therapy (in which he is now a certified guide)

· Dealing with your inner judge and saboteurs

· Establishing priorities

Larry has spent the second half of his life helping people to see the choices that are all around them, and move forward bravely, peacefully and joyfully—whether at home or work. He continues to coach people looking for a peaceful way forward and remind them that while loss changes everything, it never takes away the power to choose — to heal, to grow, and to live again.

Author Bio

Larry Freeborg

At age 40, life as Larry Freeborg knew it, ended in a single week. Just after Christmas in 1979, he lost his wife to leukemia — and days later, his job of 18 years. Suddenly, he was a widowed father of four, with no income and no roadmap forward.

What followed wasn’t a quick recovery, but a decades-long journey of learning how to grieve, how to lead with love, and how to rediscover hope in the face of unimaginable loss. Along the way, he discovered a simple but powerful truth: no matter what life takes away, you are always at choice.

Today, he is the author of Always At Choice and the founder of Stepping Through the Gate, a wise-elder coaching service. Through his writing and coaching, he helps individuals move from significant losses into a place of healing, renewal, and fully engaged life possibilities. He also partners with business leaders to clarify what they want to create in the workplace — working side by side to navigate challenges and unlock solutions.

For the past 30 years, he has been an independent coach and consultant, but before that Larry spent over 20 years in the corporate world, first at 3M Company in marketing, new business ventures and industrial graphics, and then five years with Medtronic, marketing Implantable Defibulators, Pacemakers and other heart-regulating products. He is graduate of the University of Minnesota and was a top collegiate swimmer in the region. Always At Choice follows his inclusion in the book Turning Point Moments.

With the publication of Always At Choice, Larry’s mission is simple yet profound: to remind others that while loss changes everything, it never takes away the power to choose — to heal, to grow, and to live again.
